How Can severe Nosebleeds Be Treated?

I recently had a nose bleed every day for three days, and finally went to a walk-in to have it cauterized. Since then, I ve been using saline nasal spray, and trying to keep hydrated. Also, I m using Vaseline before bedtime, and it seems to keep the nasal passages moist. Questions: How long can I use vaseline, and will it do any harm? Thanks, Tom

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Tom,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Nose bleeds happen due to damage caused on the fragile blood vessels inside the nasal mucosa in an area called 'Little's area'.
What has been done in your case is that these blood vessels has been cauterized. It should help you to stop bleeding again permanently.
However, you need to take care to prevent dryness of mucosa which could cause crusting and bleed again. Hence, it has been advised you to keep the mucosa moist by application of nasal spray and Vaseline.
Kindly follow the instructions as has been advised and take care to follow the same in situations when you feel that mucosa would dry and cause crusting. Avoid nose picking and you should be able to overcome the problem completely.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
Regards,
